Over the years, many Slovenia jerseys have made it into my collection. In fact, the country was the first real underdog I began rooting for as a child. After my interest in the German national team waned massively during the late 90s, the Slovenians quickly gained my interest as newcomers at EURO 2000. The small country made it into their first major tournament at the last minute with a win and a draw against Ukraine in the European Championship play-offs. At the time, the team had some well-known players from the Bundesliga, such as Miran Pavlin, Rudi Isntenič and Spasoje Bulajič. However, the team's superstar was a certain Zlatko Zahovič. The technically adept midfielder became his country's best player during the 90s and led his country not only to EURO 2020 but also to the 2002 World Cup. With 35 goals, Zahovič is also his country's record goalscorer.
Having a jersey from arguably Slovenia's best player in your collection is certainly an absolute highlight. So I didn't hesitate when I saw this magnificent piece. Apart from the player who wore it, it's also an absolutely iconic Adidas design in a beautiful color! The Slovenians only wore this design in a handful of games in 1997, including against their neighbors from Croatia, where this jersey also comes from.
